This is my 5th Kindle to include Fires and Paper Whites. It operates exactly like a Paper White, which is to say that the controls are a pain. The security is somewhat lacking. It is possible to turn off FreeTime which links the kindle to the parent account where your kid could just download and read any adult books. The second major problem is that FreeTime is a J O K E. The "popular free titles" aren't that popular. Yes you get Harry Potter... but no Percy Jackson? no Unwanteds? no H.I.V.E.? No Lemony Snicket? Basically if you're buying this for a 6 year old who has virtually no reading preference, you're good to go... just don't let them touch the settings button.
