How to mess up a great idea in 800+ pages
I am a long-time reader of King who loves his early work and had almost written him off in recent years, but decided to give this one a try based on the intriguing premise and the numerous 5-star ratings.
What a mistake. In the new Kindle vs. Hardcopy debate, I found a new plus on the hardcopy side of the ledger: if you hate a hardcopy book this much, you can at least get some satisfaction by throwing it against the wall.
The first adventures through the time portal were engaging and a real page-turner. And then he went through again, this time to save JFK...and then...oh, dear God. I began to think there was a mistake in producing my Kindle copy. Someone had accidentally inserted a Harlequin Romance (and not a very good one) in the middle of my King novel. And it went on...And on...And on some more.
As others have stated, it becomes a bloated, saccharine romance story of the hero finding love and single-handedly redeeming high school students through his loving care and selfless devotion to improving everyone's lives (everyone's but mine). Not one, but TWO charity benefit shows are described in page after page of endless detail. And has been mentioned, the sex life of the hero and the poor, damaged soul he falls in love with is repeated again and again and again in the most insipid manner. I wanted to shout at the book, "They're really-really-really in love and have sex alot, WE GET IT ALREADY!!!!"
Oh, well. I hope my pain and this review can save at least one poor soul from spending time and money on this book.
