★★☆☆☆
Great Company, Subpar Product.
So I saw Bunny as I'm sure others did and wanted to communicate with my 70lb Shepherd/Husky mix, Kida. She's always been very gentle and intelligent so I thought she would be an excellent candidate. And she has been. She learned the buttons and clearly demonstrated an understanding of dialogue between us when using them. I even purchased extra buttons from their website... our buttons were "Hungry" "Outside" "Cuddles" "Play" and "All Done".
They recorded easily and were loud and crisp enough for us to -just- be able to hear them down the hall in a different room when pressed in our living room. Fluent Pet has a fantastic education and support website teaching you how to create dialogue and not just "do a trick" with the buttons, helping it to be communication and not just mindless obedience training. It all set up quickly and easily and Kida was a very apt student right from the start.
On the purchasing end however...? Their website is... frustrating. Obviously you can get this sampler here on Amazon, but that's all you can get here. If you want more than to just buy single buttons (which is hella expensive) you end up paying $40 in overseas shipping... ALSO hella expensive. You also have NO option for the larger foam button holders for bigger dogs in a "sampler". So if you have a big dog? You're S.O.L. and I REEEEAAALLLY don't like that at all. Having to pay $40 for two pads of the appropriate size to even know if I can teach the button communications with my big dog is very unfair. The company needs to offer Big and Little sampler packages. So my big dog struggled with having the buttons too close together and often got frustrated when I made her correct her "babbling" (when they hit two buttons at the same time instead of communicating the correct one to you).
But in any case, My dog was learning and I was getting excited and to get the biggest bang for my buck I went on their website and saw the package that sends you a LOT of buttons to learn to communicate more complex thoughts and ideas with your dog. I almost took the plunge on that... but then Kida got excited and when she went to paw at her button to communicate, she did something to it and it no longer made sound when pushed. We no longer had our "Play" button. Concerning...
Okay. That wasn't good. So I held off. I also started to notice that she would naturally twist the buttons in the mat when she pushed them simply because of how she pawed the buttons, meaning she'd often toggle the switch on the side and have the button asking us to record the word rather than stating it. This caused confusion and frustration for both us and for Kida. Then today she went to paw her button to say "Hungry" and ask me for a bit of my banana... and she "babbled" because of the too-small foam pad and side-swipped her "Cuddles" button... and the side switch completely ripped out. It now just spouts off about if I want to record a word... and will never again say what it was supposed to say because there is no way to fix it. And the "warranty" on their website does not cover damages caused by "wear and tear". Okay, but three months? When I paid $30 for this package and another $36 for 3 more buttons and already over half of my purchase is defunct?
So I am seeing where these buttons aren't exactly very friendly for large dogs. I'm working on her to have her touch more lightly, but it's not like she's flinging them across the room or chewing on them. Kida gets excited about talking to us and "swats" the buttons sometimes and has to be reminded to be "gentle", but this seems like a normal thing for a dog that's doing something they are excited to learn to do and not something that should break a product designed for their learning process. And has that bit of a twist she does with her paw but that's been enough to damage 3 of her 5 buttons now. As much as you spend on these things... you'd think they'd last more than 3 months.
Don't be discouraged!!! If you have a smart dog/cat/pet, I 100% absolutely recommend button communication with your pet!!!!! It is SO rewarding to see them make the connections and seek to "speak" with you. It is REAL!!! However, maybe hold off on expensive products like this if you have a bigger dog and try less expensive buttons first. I love Fluent Pet. Their website is great and they teach you a lot about how to properly create dialogue between you and your pet and that's awesome... but their product needs work. And their shipping is ridiculous.
Find cheaper buttons and start there. Your wallet will be glad you did.
