Today my 3rd Kindle died. Actually to say it died is unfair. It's half dead. I've purchase the Kindle 3 times since August and all three have quit in exactly the same way. The top half of the e-ink screen dies like a bad etch-a-sketch. The first one died after just a few weeks and I sent it back and Amazon quickly refunded my money (it seems like for new units they won't cross ship you have to return it and they refund your payment). The second one I put into a studier case thinking that perhaps I might have bumped the first one (I didn't remember bumping it but it is very lightweight and anything is possible). The second one died in about the same amount of time. I travel through airport security everyday and I thought (admittedly a bit paranoid) that maybe the security systems were wrecking the screens (they never affect my X-60 laptop). I returned it and again got a refund and purchased my third unit. This unit has never left my house, never been bumped, never even been looked at in a cross manner and yet the screen is now failing in exactly the same manner, the top half of the screen is slowly fading to black. Is the unit lightweight? Yes. Is the unit crystal clear? Yes. Is the battery life exceptional? Yes. But sadly is the unit's screen reliable - no. It's a shame that my Lenovo laptop which isn't much bigger and travels everyday is much more reliable and durable. It's a pity because this seemed like a perfect e-reader but I am tired of constantly sending it back. Sorry Amazon good luck with the fire but I will wait a long time before purchasing another product like this. ******************** UPDATE 11-11-12 ******************** Replaced this unit with the Kindle Fire HD. The difference is night and day. More reliable, better platform and a true portable machine that can do it all. See my review on that product. Amazon knocked it out of the park with the HD.
