I'll be honest: I couldn't finish it.
Let me get this out of the way: I know nothing about “booktubing,” or the authors and my review does not reflect upon the fact that the publisher and editor have made some major book publication mistakes recently, one of which I have read. That said, how I feel about Zenith after trying to read it is completely my own opinion and based only on what I read: I could not finish it. By the time I reached page fifteen I was pretty sure I did not like this book, but I pressed on anyway, I believe giving books a chance. But as I kept reading, I grew more and more discouraged. A ship full of female space pirates sounded exciting and had to be kickass. An MC nicknamed the Bloody Baroness was a little off-putting and juvenile, but I liked the plot synopsis. First clue I was reading amateur writing: single sentence paragraphs. Every single page had multiple single sentences. Maybe that’s a new form of writing, but it made this book read like a script. The authors tried to incorporate descriptive semi-flowery writing but instead it came across as stilted and $100 word search. And the dialogue was weak and monotonous. The characters are covered with a sentence or two and not real deep. But, a thirteen year-old mercenary with red braids? Bit of a stretch there. A Second-In-Command named Lira that she calls Lir? I don’t know why it bothered me that she dropped the second syllable, but it did. And the BB’s hot-headed jerk ex-lover reads like someone the readers should hate but writers will the have the two get back together by the end of the first book because that’s the way all Harlequin books roll. Sorry, I don’t mean to throw shade on the authors but the book needs some major editing before publication.
