A few months ago my wife was sent for routine lab work which found that her liver enzymes were through the roof. The doctor told us that almost always this is the result of (1) hepatitis, or (2) liver cancer. She also had been tested for hepatitis so that was ruled out. Which left liver cancer. She was sent for multiple tests which could not find any sign of liver cancer. Then the doctor asked her if she had started taking any kind of medication or supplement prior to the alarming test. When she mentioned she had started taking turmeric for pain in her hands, he told her to stop and come back in a month for follow-up testing. One month later, the liver level was 1/2 what it had been. Four months later, her results were back to normal. Apparently this happens to only a small percentage of people who take turmeric but is obviously very important to know. Of course we were greatly relieved to find out that it wasn't liver cancer, after all, but believe that the manufacturer should have put some kind of warning on the product alerting consumers to this possibility.
