Beautiful in sound and looks! I'm thrilled that I chose this turntable!! VINYL FOREVER! ...(UPDATED 2017)
Good grief! Thank god I ignored that "caveat emptor" review. Thanks so much to everyone else who wrote such helpful in depth reviews. I've been inspired to write my own because of you! Here goes... Keepin' it simple:
I've been researching and deliberating for months now: I wanted a better turntable in this price range that sounded as good as it looked (I don't have my turntable hidden away). Also, I didn't want to lift the platter every time that I needed to change from 33 to 45 (I listen to a LOT of vinyl at both speeds on a regular basis, so this is actually a big deal for me).
The Teac arrived in perfect condition and looked fabulous. Also, set up was VERY simple. The cartridge was PERFECTLY aligned already (I checked with my protractor). The tracking force was a snap, although I do have a decent amount of experience setting this and enjoy doing it. Its all part of the fun of learning a new turntable! I was worried that there would be an annoying "hum" as some reviewers have mentioned, but I have NO HUM! I've never tried the AT cartridge that comes with this tt, but I HAVE used the Shure M97XE in the past and I think that this AT cart is totally on par. Love how clear high strings are and how tight and low bass is!
Please know that I do NOT have a million dollar setup, but I DO have a decent receiver and speakers that I believe are more than adequate for my needs. I listen to everything from chamber music to Small Black to Henry Mancini (all of which I thoroughly enjoyed on this Teac). I like to believe that I'm somewhat of a poor-man-version audiophile and I'm completely unwilling to buy into the pretentiousness that sometimes surrounds vinyl collecting and the gear to play it on. I just LOVE vinyl. Always have. Its the best sound reproduction, thanks. I'm so happy that more things are available in this format again and I'm definitely going to take advantage of that fact! Now if we can get more truly analogue recordings too.... I can dream!
Very happy so far! Thank you Amazon, fellow reviewers and Teac!
UPDATE: MAY 2017:
Hi folks,
Sadly, I have to edit my review of this turntable (See my original review).
I LOVED this turntable when first purchased. However, at about 13 months (Just after year warranty expired) the motor speed would fluctuate greatly. 45's sounded like chipmunks and 33 1/3's sounded slowwwwwww. I contacted TEAC but they were extremely unhelpful. I attempted to adjust the speed by using the small opening underneath the plinth but could never get it just right. Finally, the motor slowed until it did not function any longer. Maybe this is my fault for my speed adjustment attempt, but I could NOT tolerate listening to records with their speeds all over the place.
I've read many opinions/experiences on vinyl blogs about others having a very similar issue.
Perhaps if you don't use your turntable on a regular basis, you might get a longer life from it. I listen to vinyl virtually every day.
I've moved on to the Pro-Ject Esprit. VERY happy with it so far (speed is extremely consistent!), but will wait to review until some time has passed.
