Bests & Worsts Reviews from Amazon

Just finished this book and unfortunately am so disappointed :( I had high hopes for it based on all reviews and storyline but unfortunately it fell short on all levels for me. The good: the writing was beautiful, almost lyrical in the style. But even with lovely writing I often caught myself losing interest quickly and having to go back several paragraphs and reread to even figure out where I was. The bad: I really don’t understand all the great reviews for this, but maybe I missed something. The main character is quirky and endearing to a certain level but I never really felt much for him or any of the characters beyond that. Many reviews said this book was hysterical but I don’t think I laughed once... if anything, I found it sad and slightly depressing. My biggest disappointment was the letdown on the last befall plot. A writer who travels the world is set up for an amazing adventure story and there was so little on culture, the actual places he visits, or what he learns and experiences at these places. Rather, there is a medley of flashbacks and other events that felt disjointed and overall lacked depth to me.
