Killed zero wasps; killed butterflies instead
I’ve not once written a poor review on Amazon in all the years I’ve had Prime. Typically, I attempt to work out whatever issue with the seller first. I always try to handle it respectfully, knowing that everyone makes mistakes, and to avoid damaging the business when possible. However, in this case, I cannot in good conscience stay silent.
I raise monarch butterflies. Wasps have been brutally killing and decapitating my full-grown monarch caterpillars, but I cannot find the source nest to stop them, and I cannot raise all of the caterpillars indoors (I don’t have the time or space). So I searched for a solution to save them from the predators. I read the reviews prior to buying these and saw all of the suggestions for better trapping, including SEVERAL reviews that praised these for being totally ineffective with the bird guard on but successfully killing all their wasps with the bird guard off, all while killing no inadvertent innocent strays. The reviews totally sold me. What I got, instead, was a starved, dead butterfly, a skeletal, tiny, dead lizard, two injured butterflies that I rescued, and two little injured lizards that I was able to save. The entire process—from discovery, to peeling their tiny hands and feet and wings, to greasing them up with olive oil so they could move again—was heartbreaking.
My traps arrived in a timely manner—but they did not come with the bird guards. No worries, though, I thought, since so many reviews said that they barely worked with the guards on, anyway. In almost a month of having these, not a SINGLE wasp was caught. I did catch a fair amount of flies, but that wasn’t my problem. The traps are now in the trash. Please, if you have any butterflies or other harmless, tiny creatures that frequent your yard, do not hang these, with or without the bird guards. If you are one of the fortunate who actually caught wasps with these, despite your good intentions, do not write reviews encouraging people to hang these without bird guards. These are highly effective killers, just not for the creatures I needed to kill. I will not be asking for any compensation as I feel terrible enough for purchasing these in the first place and doing such harm where I was intending to do so much good.
