Removable plates yes, but the trick is getting them to stay in!
Sure the plates are removable for easy cleaning which is why I decided to go for this model. I've had a lower model George Foreman Grill for years but cleaning the non-removable plates is a pain. So I was so excited when I got my new grill home last night and got it all set up. What they don't tell you is that the plates are held in place by flimsy small metal clips, two for the top plate and two for the bottom. I saw how they were supposed to snap into place and all and went to try it out. I instantly had a problem when I closed the lid and the top plate came unclipped and fell. I figured I just didn't clip it well enough and tried again. I clipped it in there and made sure it was secure. I opened and closed the lid several times and even shook it a little and it was fine. I plugged it in and as the machine began to heat up the top plate became unhinged again and "thud". Because heat causes metal to expand and these little clips are, well, little. So I unplugged it, let it cool down and tried again. Really tried to get it in there and secure. And once again, as soon as it started to heat up, "thud", the plate falls. I'm surprised there aren't more people reporting this problem as it seems like a serious design flaw. Maybe I just got a crappy one. But those clips don't really look all that sturdy or robust and considering they're holding in a very hot electrical grill plate, I'd rather not take my chances. I sent it back and will stick with my old one.
