Coast XT is not safe sea kayak - not stable in small swells - sea rescue is almost impossible
Negatives: * This is not safe sea kayak - I would rate it outright dangerous to take to sea * It is almost impossible to rescue at sea with this kayak in any swells/waves - both self and assisted rescue is futile. * Plan on pulling/towing the kayak to shore if you flip over. * Boat completely fills up with water when flipped; Compartments do not seal + the air can get out through the zippers and bow/stern tip - it will fill up fast even upside down * Boat zipper will give way and the boat opens up when attempting to lift bow/stern to get water out from rescue boat * Boat opens up once the zippers give way - this is the end of the rescue - someone will have to tow the kayak or take the paddle on board abandoning the kayak * Boat is fairly unstable, especially at slow speed. Paddling fast helps, but can be exhausting just to feel safe in small 2' swells * Boat quite sensitive to wind, this is made worse with the lack of stability - one cannot safely edge even in small sea swells. Fast, endurance paddling seems to be only way to help the stability. * The moat was advertised to come with thigh pads - arrived without them - Oru kayaks apologize but provided no remedy or discount. Suggested that the pads do not ship anymore to save customers money. Ohh, well, at least they responded to my email about the missing thigh pads. Positives: * The portability convenience is awesome * Good kayak for lakes and calm water with swimming distance to shore * Tracks well in calm weather without wind * it is reasonably fast boat I personally bought the kayak for sea trips - so, this is complete wast of money for my use. I am glad that I did not drowned though - thank you coast guard - I'd have pretty hard time to swim almost mile around the cliffs to the nearest beach. My friend had to be rescued too - he tried to help to rescue me. It is better to loose $2.5k or boat than to drown. The least I can do is to warn others. I consider myself above average river/white water kayaker with OK strength and endurance; with basic sea experience. Hope it helps
