Complete nonsense (aside from the obvious $$$ for the studio)
I understand that double dipping is a great way for studios to make money on the DVD/Blu-ray releases. However, when a superior version of the LOTR trilogy already exists on the LOTR Limited Edition DVDs, why would anyone buy an inferior product on Blu-Ray? If you own a Blu-Ray player and a HDTV, then you can watch the extended editions of the movie in 1080p anyway with a good enough HDMI cable. It is complete nonsense not to release the extended editions of LOTR on Blu-Ray as the definitive version to own.
