Plugged it in, sparked internally, popping noise, emitted smoke, and fried a $500 connected device.
I got this to use in my electronics rack where the main components of my network and home automation system are located. I wanted this model because the outlets are spaced apart in a way that makes it so I can plug in all the small transformers that power my electronic devices. I mounted it on the wall and plugged it in with the switch on the power strip in the off position. When I flipped the switch to the on position, it sparked internally, made a loud popping noise, emitted smoke, and nothing powered up. This was alarming. The green lights next to the switch were off. I quickly unplugged it only to realize that a $500 device connected to it was not working. I tried plugging it into the wall directly and got nada. I took it apart and found internal circuit damage that is beyond my ability to repair. At the time I thought it wouldn't be too big of a deal because APC would cover it. In hindsight, I was a naive sweet summer child thinking that. I reviewed APC's "Equipment Protection Policy" and learned that: (a) I needed to register the power strip with the card provided in the box within 10 days of purchasing it and (b) it only covers damage due to "power line transients." Regarding (a), I hadn't even opened the box within 10 days of receiving it because I was collecting components for a larger project of which this was one. Strike one. Regarding (b), there wasn't a power line transient. My breaker wasn't tripped, nothing else in my house was affected. Instead, the problem was that the device was faulty from the outset. Strike two. And to top it off, I am beyond the return window to return it for a refund. Strike three. Upon determining I was screwed, I decided to disassemble it and take pictures so everyone else can it in all its burnt glory. Needless to say, I'm not buying this again.
