So many issues
Okay.
OK, so this first complaint is just a personal pet peeve of mine.
Why do all the women in sci-fi/paranormal romance have red hair? Or red hair and green/blue eyes? It’s the most rare color combo in the world.
Only 2% of the population has red hair.
Only 2% of the population has green eyes.
Only 0.14% has both red hair and green eyes. Less than that have red hair and blue eyes so WHY?!
(Seriously scroll and see how many covers in PNR and scifi romance have red heads on the cover. It’s...a LOT! And I’m not hating redheads—I’m married to one!)
MOST OF YOUR READERS HAVE BROWN EYES AND BLACK/BROWN HAIR.
So, maybe...represent them more?
(Why do you think Bella from Twilight was so relatable to so many teens? She was unremarkable and looked like 98% of the caucasian population! Better yet, do mixed/multi race characters! We’re growing to be the majority now, yay!)
So why are redheads so insanely over-represented in paranormal in scifi Romance? Because authors want someone that stands out and is “rare” and that’s the easiest way to do it, I guess?
😐
Ugh.
Now to the real issues...
The toxic alphahole thing...the, “Mine, mine! MiNe!” Two-year-old throwing a tantrum trope is so so overdone and tired. Can we retire it, please?
I don’t want a controlling book boyfriend. I want a book boyfriend who is in control of himself.
I don’t want a possessive book boyfriend. I’m not a toy to be owned. I want a protective hero. I want *belonging*. Not ownership.
That requires *relationship development* and *trust building*.
Lust is not love.
Lust is not love.
Lust is not love.
Vrushka is that typical “nice guy” that starts off meh then quickly escalates when you reject him to toxic rage monster who goes on and on about how he’s owed something and then proceeds to passive aggressively punish and pressure the woman until she caves or gets a restraining order.
Hella toxic and yuck! Seriously, if you think this is sexy, seek therapy NOW!
Here are some snippets:
“My anger ignites. “You deny us? Still? I have caught you. You belong to me now! You ran and I caught you, my bride. Baring yourself to me and giving yourself over to my protection is all that is left!” I want to grab her, pull her to me, and shake her with sense. “It is what I have won! What I am owed!”
“How dare she? How dare she deny me? She thinks she can have my protection for nothing in return? She thinks her actions will not have consequences?”
“You will come to realize your situation and the generosity I provide.”
“If she does not want me, then she will have to watch me in my madness. She will witness what she does to me by her mere presence alone.“
“Because the only protectors of this world are brutal and territorial, and I am kind in comparison to them....But my kindness has limits.”
And of course this bullying works pretty fast.
“Seeing me naked isn’t that much to give… He could have asked for much more, and he still might, if I keep denying him, and asking questions he clearly doesn’t like answering. If I don’t give him something, he might make me pay for every inch of his hospitality going forward.”
To then:
“I feel… lucky to have been chosen by him. Appreciative now that I’ve had food, warmth, and sleep.“
And finally:
“He said he wouldn’t touch! But I don’t stop him as he...”
Girl, the misogyny is coming from inside the house! You’re being manipulated and abused! Run! He literally does not respect your boundaries. If you said don’t touch and he touched—that’s called assault.
Nothing like a little emotional abuse, guilt tripping and manipulation to make a great start to a relationship. Ugh.
I get it. He’s the alien caveman trope. Me Tarzan—you Jane. But what we have here is a toxic, abusive “nice guy” repacked as man snake and a previously intelligent professional woman who has devolved into a lusty sex-obsessed moron after one-A single compliment. That’s the price of her dignity, a single compliment. Yiikkkeees.
She never falls for him as a person (which...why would she? He’s awful.), she only likes his abs and ...assets. It’s completely shallow. I had to stop at 38% when she caved and jumped into the sack with him for a damn compliment. Good god.
If you were sold to a random man, told you have no choice but to eventually do it with him and then he got mad when you rejected him and proceeded to wack it in front of you, calling your name all the while to “punish you” for denying him your body he feels he’s owed, would you be like “ooo yes take me now?” Or “ahhh police!”
Right.
Now add a tail. It makes it worse—not better.
He’s irredeemable. I don’t want them to end up together.
