Inaccurate and spiteful fictional portrayal of the early mormon church
I realize this was a fictional book but there was no attempt to give accurate information about how polygamy was actually practiced by the Mormon church in the 1800s. I don't know if Olivia Hawker just made stuff up, had bad sources, or just just mixed in today's fundamentalists polygamy groups' teachings. Despite what you read, most men did not practice polygamy. Those that did had to have permission from the first wife and an additional wife had to know and accept being in a polygamy household. There were no "surprise marriages" Some women were happy in a polygamous household because it allowed them to pursue business and educational opportunities and shared childcare. Other women were unhappy in these marriages and wanted out. Unlike other states, divorce was actually readily granted in Utah at the time. Portraying the men in the mormon church as all evil caricatures is a ridiculous ploy to get sympathy for the women characters.
