I have purchased chia seeds for years, from other sellers. I have never found plant stems or any other contaminants, (I do check). I purchased (8), 1 lb. pouches of "NATIVAS NATURALS ORGANIC RAW CHIA SEEDS" from Amazon, because the price was reasonable. After opening the first, (non vacuum sealed) pouch, and adding 4 TBSP. of the seeds to a container, to be refrigerated over-night for rehydration. While visually checking the seed, I discovered what appeared to be mouse feces. I removed the item and placed it under a dissecting microscope. It was mouse feces. I was shocked! I am not a "chia seed" expert. However, my take on the problem are as follows: 1) These seeds are much larger than others that I have purchased, roughly the same diameter as mouse feces, allowing both the seed and mouse feces to both pass through the separating screen during the separation process. 2) Due to the size of the seed, visual quality control seems almost impossible. Although some of the "comments" on Amazon, regarding this product state that the FDA approves a given amount of "contamination", or that a few mouse feces is harmless, think about this. If this company realizes that there may be a "mouse", problem, don't you think that they have attempted to take measures to eliminate the mice? How is this accomplished? Traps and RODENT POISON! Again, this is my personal assumption. SUGGESTIONS: 1) Purchase seed that are vacuum packaged with a clear window, to view the seed at a glance.= The company at least gives an initial view of what to expect. 2) ALWAYS visually check the seed before including them for your edible use. NOTE: I give Amazon full credit and thank's for refunding my entire order, (that includes the pouch that I opened). They also paid for the return postage.
