Hello Baby vs Motorolla ... spoiler alert: Hello Baby loses
I never take the time to write this in depth of a review or compare products the way I did with this monitor. But I am doing it because I feel if someone would have done it, I would have never bought this monitor. I did buy this monitor for two reasons: the number of 5 star reviews and the price. Heres a back story. We have a 4 month old who we will start transitioning from our room in a bassinet to crib on second story in the next 2 months. Yes, yes. We keep our babies in our room for 6 months. Many have scoffed but it is what I feel comfortable doing. That being said, I also want to have a great monitor to ease my worries during the transition. We had a sound-only monitor with our first child but then again, we were in a 1 story house with the nursery being a few steps away. So, I decided to try this Hello Baby monitor (5 stars/$90) and the Motorola MBP36S 3.5" (3 stars/$160). I bought them at the same time and tested them side by side in daylight and night vision. My main concerns were being able to scan the room if needed, zoom in to check if my baby is breathing and quick response time (turning on monitor, picking up baby's cry, etc.) Both have musical lullabies, night vision, 2 way communication and had good reception from everywhere in our 2400 sq. ft. home. PROS: The Hello Baby had a little bit more of an attractive design to me because it was smaller and much thinner. Easier for me, as a female, to hold with one hand or tuck in my back pocket. It is $70 cheaper which did matter to me because this is our last child and I knew I wouldn't be using it for a long period of time. CONS: The image was grainy and blurred to the point where I couldn't see if my baby was breathing during day or nighttime. The lullabies were much more simple and a bit irritating due to their higher pitch (in comparison to the other monitor). I don't think I would have noticed until I heard the more quality and lower toned lullabies from the Motorolla monitor. I felt the reviews and description were a bit misleading when it said you can pan and scan the room. In fact you can only pan once you are zoomed in 2x and can only pan the exact spacing that you could see with it zoomed out. I measured this area and it was about 2 feet wide and 1 foot high. So, I could not pan from watching my child in the crib to the door, window, dresser, anywhere. Basically just from one side of the crib to the other. The Motorolla can pan from one wall to the other directly behind it and up to the ceiling and down to the floor (sounds like a song, right?) I will be returning this Hello Baby monitor. I feel the reviews were biased/incorrect/inflated...I don't know why but I don't appreciate not being able to trust Amazon's reviews like I used to. This video monitor may work for some...but for me, even though it was $70 less expensive, in this case, you get what you pay for. I'll be sticking with the 3 star Motorolla video monitor for peace of mind. Hope this helps someone.
