moves air, but doesn't purify it
I have owned several air purifiers over the past years. They no longer make filters for the last one I owned, so I purchased a new one. I live on a first floor apartment with two cats. So there is a lot of dust from first floor, dander and kitty litter dust from the cats. After opening the Winix purifier, I was impressed with the build quality. The purifier was solid. Most purifiers come with the thin sponge like carbon filter that mainly serves to catch larger particles as a pre filter than it does to filter odors. I spent the extra money to get the washable filter and remote control.
This purifier had a honeycomb plastic filter with granulated carbon. I was really impressed. After removing the plastic i installed the hepa filter based on arrow showing air direction. Then the carbon filter and finally the permanent filter designed to catch larger particles.
Once running my first impressions were the turbo speed would be effective, but the other three speeds were to slow to be effective. I let the purifier run for a few days. My other purifiers would have the pre filter covered in cat hair, dander and dust from litter or outside within a few days time. After a week of running this filter has nothing built up on the permanent pre filter. Holding a piece of paper to the intake shows there is barely enough suction to hold the paper except on turbo.
I then tried smoke and dust tests in front of the filter. Instead of sucking in the dust/smoke like my other purifiers, the smoke/dust followed the air blowing out the top of the purifier and just circulated the room. The air blowing out creates a much stronger draft than the air being sucked in so any particles in the air never get drawn into the filters and just follow the air blowing out and circulate around the room. I decided to check the filters and noticed the hepa filter is about 1/8 or 1/16 of an inch to small all the way around the perimeter. The carbon filer is even smaller with fuzzy material taped on sides to hold it in place. I am not sure if lack of suction is compromised by this lack of fit or just the fact the fan blowing out is stronger than the suction in.
I am really upset considering I spent $250 on the purifier which is a lot on my salary and I needed it for health related reasons. I how have to save up for a new air purifier.
Pros:
solid construction
appealing desing
granulated carbon filter
Cons:
purifier doesn't actually draw in particles, just circulates them around the room
I threw away the box, so I cannot return the item. Pretty upset considering the amount I paid for a product that doesn't work and wont fill my health needs. suspect of positive reviews on site.
