This in not a microscope. It is a viewer with specially designed slides which click into place allowing the microscope to provide some voice information on what you are looking at. There are 3 items on each of the 20 slides. I think the age group for this Toy is a bit high. It states for 4 to 7 but my 6 year old was done using it after three slides. A Preschooler is age 2 1/2 to 5 not 7. It has a locked viewer with a back light to see the image on the slide. The slides have magnified images and are not actual items. You might be able to look at other slides and items but the 5x power is weak and when we tried this it was actually not as good as using a good magnifying glass. The duel eyepieces is nice but when used the view is split into two different aspects which made it hard for my son. I had him close one eye so he could see just one image aspect and it made it better but not much. I cannot give this one star as the description does state the slides have images. The voice with quiz is a nice touch, has some good information, and is very reactive when the slides are put in place but it would be nice to be able to Mute the voice. The ability to change languages and store the slides with the microscope is nice. When this was order and I read microscope and I was taken back to the first microscope I had as a kid and was really excited to use this with my son. As we removed the slides I started to tell him to be careful as I remember glass slides being sharp. These slides are images encased in plastic and are safe to handle. Unfortunately this item is not what I was anticipating. I think we could have gotten a View Master viewer and enjoyed the images more. Know what you are purchasing. I am sure this will be great for younger children.
