Used to be the best out there, but now has mandatory Google Ads at the home screen
I have two Shield devices, specifically for two reasons: it handles 4k and HDR content very well, and it did not have any ads in the Home screen (only recommendations, that you can filter to your liking or completely disable). As of yesterday, Google changed the Android TV interface on the Shield to include content ads directly at the top of the Home screen. This includes ads for content that may be rated PG or above, and the images displayed for some of these ads are definitely not age-appropriate for young children. If you don't mind the ads or don't have young children at home (or proper parenting is not important to you), the device is very good and I do recommend it. You can also install a custom Launcher and hopefully set it to launch at boot to bypass the default UI (Google blocks you from changing the default Launcher as well, which sucks). Otherwise, go for a more expensive HTPC setup, because almost everything out there will have the same issue with ads, including Smart TVs. Android used to be about the freedom to customise your UI to your liking, something that iOS never allowed. As with most things, once Google achieved an almost-monopoly, they reverted everything back to "this is how it's going to look and you better like it".
