A Completely Unbiased Review
***I did NOT receive this product to review (unlike many of the previous reviewers). This is my completely unbiased opinion***
After accidentally waking up our 2 month old several times to make sure she was fine/still breathing, my husband and I decided to purchase a video monitor (we had purchased an Angelcare monitor before she was born, but since we are using a wedge pillow under her crib mattress for reflux, we can no longer use the breathing monitor feature). I was initially attracted to this monitor because of the overall good, albeit small number of reviews, and the ability to use the app to check in on her from anywhere, a nice feature for my husband while he is at work.
However, my husband and I quickly became disappointed in this monitor, even more so after purchasing another video monitor to compare (the Motorola MBP36).
1. Video quality: Poor.
At night and during the day, the picture quality leaves much to be desired. It is pixelated and it was difficult for my husband and I to see our daughter's face (like, for instance, whether her swaddle blanket was riding up over her mouth). I certainly couldn't tell if she was breathing or not. Since I had never owned a video monitor before, I thought that perhaps I didn't know what to expect and that this monitor was "normal" quality. After seeing the picture on the Motorola, that was completely false! The Motorola monitor offers us a wonderfully clear view of our daughter, day or night. Just to clarify - I'm commenting on picture quality using the handheld parent unit, NOT the picture quality using the app, which is dependent on the quality of your wifi.
2. Camera Quality: Good
I felt like the camera itself was a solid piece of equipment, and the panning feature was very smooth. I liked that you could turn off the camera's lights so as not to disturb your baby. You can also zoom several times, but because of the poor picture quality, I didn't find this feature useful at all.
3. Audio: Good
I could hear my baby just fine, and the 2 way communication feature was nice.
4. Parent Unit: Acceptable
The unit itself feels a bit light, not very sturdy. The screen is nice, and the buttons feel smooth when you push them (no sticking). The kickstand on the back is nice too.
However, the navigation of the settings was confusing. Even after consulting the manual, my husband and I could not figure out how to get the temperature reading in Fahrenheit rather than Celsius - the directions to bring up the settings screen simply did not work. I'm not sure if our handheld unit was defective or if the directions were incorrect.
Also, we found the temperature gauge to be off by several degrees (compared to the Motorola monitor and our Angelcare monitor, which displayed similar temperatures).
5. App: No Review
After downloading the app on my iPhone, I tried to link it to my camera a couple times, but it would freeze during the authentication screen. I never actually got it to work, but I only tried twice before we decided to purchase another monitor, so I feel like I can't properly review the app.
Conclusion: I'm quite surprised by the five and four star reviews of this product. Please note that many of those reviews disclose that they did receive the monitor specifically to review (presumably at no cost). I purchased this monitor myself, and will be returning it because of the very poor video quality.
