My 1st Kindle coming from 3 Nooks..my thoughts...
I have had 3 Nooks as gifts and this is my 1st Kindle received yesterday. I have always wanted a Kindle but really loved certain features only available on the Nook, until now. Here are my thoughts:
Size> The size of the Kindle is almost the same as the Nook Touch. Without a cover the Nook is easier to hold than the Kindle due to the design. But I especially love the Kindle cover, very sleek & adds almost no additional bulk/weight. I like the auto on/off function. The bezel on the side of the Kindle is almost too small but with the cover it's just right. You can already see the fingerprints on the bezel too (I posted a pic on the product page). I wish the bezel was rubberized like the back of the Kindle, it is on the Nook.
Screen> The screen on the Kindle is a fraction of a second faster for page turns than the Nook (when I 1st turned the Kindle on it was slow turning pages & I was worried but after charging it is now much faster). Other screen functions, such as Home screen, settings, shopping..etc are slower than the Nook. I am glad the Kindle finally has a homepage that shows covers..etc. The Nook has shown covers since the 1st generation & I love that. I wish the Kindle had a Library page like the Nook that showed only my books..etc but I can only find my books on the Home page where half the screen shows books that Amazon recommends. I also miss having the icon at the top of the Nook that would take me right back to the place in the book I am currently reading regardless of what other screen I am on. With the Kindle you have to go back to the Home page and then select the book again to open. (Please feel free to correct me if I am wrong. Maybe I have missed something).
Display> The lettering and covers are darker and a little more distinct than the Nook's. It's nice to see the Kindle finally has more font choices. The Nook has always had 5-6 fonts and I didn't realize the Kindle didn't until now. The lettering on the Nook Glow is much lighter & diminished compared to the Nook Touch and Kindle. I am happy that the Kindle's lettering is still dark & distinct even with the light feature.
Screensaver> I chose the special offers Kindle since you can't customize your screensaver anyway. I miss that function because on my Nook I have pictures of my family as my screensaver.
Screen Light> I also have the dim areas on the bottom of my Kindle but everything else is even. I think I can get used to that. I am concerned that I contacted Amazon before my purchase to ask if the light can be turned off and was told yes. It also states in the manual it can be turned off. My light does not turn completely off, only very dim. I have followed the directions per the manual. The light will not turn off. The Nook's light can be turned completely off but it is not as uniform on the screen when lit & there have been many issues with the Nook's screen being defective.
Overall, I like the Kindle. I have been with Amazon for many years and finally I have access to their Kindle library :o) I love love Amazon's website. The B&N website is very slow, I hated using it. I always came to Amazon to find new books & then went to purchase them from the B&N site. And there were times after finding a book on Amazon it would not be available for the Nook or cost more. I am happy to finally have my Kindle.
**EDIT** I have had several replacements due to screen issues. All have had blue/pink/green discolorations in different areas on the screen. Also 2 had pin pricks of bright light shining through on the screen and a third had a defective led light at the bottom. I was told one of the replacements would be looked at by an engineer before it was shipped but still came with screen issues. I do love this kindle and everything else about it but I am disappointed. Even though the Nook's screen lighting wasn't as even it never had any colors on the screen. I have never had this kind of issue with any electronic I've purchased or with Amazon in general. I have to decrease my initial rating from 4 stars to 2 stars due to these issues. I guess if this was a small issue it wouldn't be a big deal but the lighted screen is the main feature of this new Kindle. I must say I am loving being able to access amazon's library, it's so easy to use and I like the recommendations. I really am enjoying this Kindle more each day. I just wish the screen was as advertised.
