Terrible Jack, Falsely advertised Warranty
This is one badly made jack combined with false advertising on their Lifetime warranty.
Jack came in quickly from amazon. Looked pretty. Made in China. I did the bleed routine but found the first 1/4th of the lever movement was flat spot/ free play, and didn't do any actual lifting. I attributed this to a quirky jack and it didn't bother me much especially due to the lifetime warranty. If it wasn't for the warranty, it would've gone right back. Jack worked great otherwise though the force required was a good bit more than any other Jack I've had, even with the long lever. It was way more effort than the $100 Torin Race Jack sold here on amazon. The effort itself didnt bother me, but gave me the feeling that the leverage was wrong and the piston assembly was under undue stress. Kinda like it was trying to lift more than it should per stroke to aid quicker lifting. I could feel the lever bending, something Ive never experienced in any of the jacks Ive used before. All the jacks ive used before, I could lift the car with just my arm muscle. On this jack, sometimes it was easier to just lean on it with my body weight. This wasn't very confidence inspiring, but I assumed this is how it was designed, I did'nt care as long as it worked.
About 10 months into my ownership, and about 20 uses, the jack started leaking. There was no local places to warranty the jack so I called the nearest dealer in Canada and he used some choice words to describe OTC and their products and said they no longer do OTC stuff due to the number of returns they've had. He asked me to call the OTC distributor in Ontario. I called the main distributor for OTC Canada, he just asked me to return it to the place of purchase so that an OTC agent can look at it and decide on its/my fate. I asked if they could just send me the hydraulic unit and they said no they dont do that, since its a full assembly and has to be replaced/repaired as a whole or something along those lines.
So I called up the nearest US warranty place and I explained the situation to him. The moment I said Lifetime Warranty, he interrupted me immediately and corrected me saying " Limited " lifetime warranty for Parts and Labor. So I asked him, does the seal leaking within 10 months, with no more than 20 lifts constitute a bad part? He said, it could be, you will have to speak to OTC directly. I couldnt get through to OTC, so I called another dealer and he point blank said,no warranty, we repair those jacks all the time, Leaking seals are not a warranty item, its 34.99 bucks labor + whatever parts costs + shipping both ways ( about $60). I asked him if he could just send me the hydraulic unit to save on shipping but that was a no go.
At this point, I just packed it all up and sent it back to amazon, paid 30 bucks in shipping. It was more than year old by then and I dont care if I dont see a single buck for it but I dont want it in my garage anymore and I refuse to deal with OTC.
The main reason I bought this jack for 250 bucks is because I didnt wanna spend 100 bucks every year to raise and lower my car 20 times. When they said lifetime warranty, I had the feeling that they actually trusted their product enough to issue such a warranty, and, in case I had issues, Id get it replaced immediately. I had the $100 Torin Racing Jack previously, and it did the same job for the same time, 1 year, 20 odd lifts and died, but did the whole thing for a 100 bucks. Torin even sent me a full hydraulic assembly for FREE but that failed shortly thereafter.
Just another junk chinese jack with a misrepresented warranty. I cant imagine how many people fall for the "lifetime" warranty advertised. I know i did. Do yourself a favor before you buy this jack, call up an OTC dealer in your area and tell them you have a failed jack and see what they say.....
