Cheesecloth Works Better Than This
I bought this product because there were so many great reviews suggesting you could drain the whey from yogurt in less time than cheesecloth, get a thicker consistency, and save space in the refrigerator with easy cleanup after. While I can see how these things are true if you've never made thick yogurt with cheesecloth, I can't understand how the video advertising this product yields a thick, almost jello-like mould of yogurt you can actually slice. This has never happened for me. The consistency of the yogurt is actually thickest on the bottom, which then blocks drainage for the rest, leaving an uneven drain overall unless you mix every few hours. I had to do this for almost two days to thicken enough for my satisfaction, lengthening the overall time-to-yogurt. With cheesecloth I leave it overnight to drain in a colander, which is put in a larger mixing bowl. The whole thing sits in the fridge untouched and the next morning the yogurt is very thick--standing on the spoon actually. But not the case with this "greek yogurt maker". I will say the consistency is very smooth, but not impressively thick. And never enough to flip it over in tact as the video suggests.
