It is very difficult to fit a dog jacket. Going up in size means that a medium is 25% larger than a small, etc. So, the Gooby medium is slightly large around the chest on my 12.5 pound Havapoo (16.5 inch chest and 15 inch length). I was more concerned about the length than the chest. This vest has a 12.75 inch length, which, so far, hasn't resulted in my male dog soiling his jacket. I really liked this product. First, it has a built-in harness. This is perfect for me, because my puppy has long hair. If I leave him in his harness all day, his hair becomes matted. With the Gooby, my dog does not need a separate harness, so I can leave it off him all winter. Second, it is thicker than most other jackets. Yes, I know thickness doesn't necessarily equate with warmth, but in this case I think it does. Third, I like the zipper closure on top. There is a protective flap so that hair doesn't get caught in the zipper. A velcro closure would give a snugger fit, but can catch my dog's long hair. Finally, it is very easy to put on. However, the zipper broke the first time I put it in the washing machine (gentle cycle). It was past the return date, but Amazon allowed me to return and replace the vest. So, I just washed the second vest. Once again, the zipper did not survive the gentle cycle. Amazon gave me a credit.
