I bought the starter kit inasmuch as they have very flexible options for minutes/texts/data allowing you to tailor a plan to suit your actual usage. And the prices listed are quite competitive. However, when I went to set up a phone with a minimum usage plan just to try the service, I found that in addition to the listed prices, there is also a $2 monthly 'service fee' and $2.15 in taxes (this for the 100 minutes, 100 texts, and 300 mb plan). So, instead of $10 per month, the monthly price with fees and taxes is $14.15, a 41% surcharge over the quoted price. For the 'real world' plan that I would have chosen if I decided to make the full switch to US Mobile, the quoted price is $28 - the actual price with taxes and fees is $32.50, a 16% upcharge over the quoted price. The lack of transparent pricing was a big turnoff for me. If I had known the true pricing up front, I may have still committed to US Mobile, because on balance, their pricing is not bad in comparison to others. But I don't like dealing with a carrier that uses marketing that is misleading, and that does not allow you to make a truly fair comparison to other carriers that do not hide surcharges from potential customers. My current carrier, H2O, has pricing that includes all fees, taxes, etc. My wife uses SpeedTalk mobile, and they too include taxes, etc, in their pricing. So, if you are comparing pricing with other carriers, be sure to add a minimum of $4.15 to US Mobiles quoted monthly prices to make an honest price comparison. Three stars for being an average discount cellular service, minus one star for lack of transparency in net costs, especially when compared to other low cost providers.
