Impression: VMH500 & VMH600 Vornado heaters are climate control devices, for sealed, pre-heated houses.
Bought my Vornado VMH 500 & 600 Heaters on 2016/12-15 The troubleshooting section, in the manual, says "close all doors and windows to trap heat. Allow unit to fully circulate heat throughout room; may take several minutes." This heater was slow heating rooms of 15 ft x 20 feet and 20 x 25 feet. My Vornado, set on 90 degrees and high, ran for approximately 3 hours, and barely hit 65 degrees. The temperature was 38 to 40 degrees outside in winter. I kept re-positioning my Vornado heater, working the controls, and finally putting the setting on 90 degrees, high fan, without the timer, to get any significant heat towards me, while getting dressed. Brrrrr! Turned heater on. Set the thermostat to 80. Put on High setting. Place 4 feet away. I get a lukewarm blast of air. The fan doesn't seem to be on high. I change the temperature to 90. The air flow finally seems sufficient but still luke warm. I put the heater 3 feet then 2 1/2 feet away to finally somewhat get the heat blast I'm looking for. The set thermostat temperature never seemed to match the room temperature. I was CONSTANTLY fiddling with the remote. The heater would turn off, and I would be cold. Turn it on, runs until the 3 degrees below the set temperature, turns off, and I would be cold. Turn it on to 90 etc. I would expect some fiddling with a new product but this fiddling NEVER ended after an entire year! The lower heat level light of purple would come on before reaching the desired temperature. I expected some serious heat to come out UNTIL the temperature was reached. It doesn't. This just doesn't work for me. I tested the thermostat for accuracy with two thermometers. The thermostat was consistently off by 3 degrees. For the price, that, in my eyes, is inexcusable. I called up Vornado and the guy said the 3 degree variance was within manufacturing standards, and to remember this heater was an environmental control heater. He was willing to provide Return Authorization(RA) to check the issue, but if the problem wasn't what they considered a malfunction, I would be charged for the shipping. So the warranty really is only good if the unit blatantly breaks and you must trust that Vornado will agree. Otherwise, you will be hit with major postage since this heater isn't light. Manual: "We expect this product to be PERFECT. if it's not, WE will make it right." What am I going to do now with a 5 year warranty that doesn't help me with the designed in flaws that will be called “normal"? "Whole Room Heater" is mentioned in the product description. My experience has been that the ENTIRE volume of air raises in temperature slowly; so no heat blast.. If my room was cold, I had a long wait. I liked the vortex air circulation idea since heaters like the heated oil ones don't disperse the heat. However, there needs to be a button labeled "HEAT BLAST" for those that need to get warm BEFORE the whole darn room does! The remote was helpful since I could turn the heater on from my bed. However…………for the price, the remote was cheaply made and didn't always register when pressed. I was constantly repeat clicking to set the time and temperature. The remote buttons require you to continue, linearly, through the numbers. I felt like a Skinner box rat every time I set temperature or hour settings. And if you held the button down, to avoid that situation, the movement through the numbers, on it's own, was painfully slow. I'd have gladly paid another 5 bucks for a time saving keypad. The buttons on the VMH600, itself, lack a positive feel for when the button was pressed . And again……standing there waiting for the numbers to run through to the number you wanted instead of offering a keypad; Nope….No escape from the Skinner Box. Imagine if telephones were this way……..holding down a button until you got to number 7 or 9, etc. That's why phones have keypads and nobody should put up with this digital linear %$%P. It isn't cheaper either when I consider how much time I wasted waiting for the darn thing to get to the number I wanted. Now…….I did like the metal box. I think that is a heck of a lot safer than plastic if the thing catches on fire, and I was able to touch the outside surface everywhere except the circle in the front(of course). The flush inset handle on the top was also very nice. I liked that you could set the whole bottom of the cube on the floor; Very stable. There are controls on the unit as well so you don't have to go remote hunting. It's attractive and quiet. The timer is a nice feature that allows up to 12 hours whereas many heaters have much shorter time spans; Prevents it running all day accidentally. The temperature is always visible, being on the top and the front of the unit. My impression is VMH500 and VMH600 Vornado is a subtle climate control device for sealed houses that have already been heated to temperature by a furnace. Not a heat blaster for imperfect houses where the occupant needs to be warm NOW, while the house is being heated. I have a couple 11 inch tall x 6 1/2 inches left to right x 4 inches thick units at 58.48 @ that, so far, really work well. These have replaced my two Vornados that cost me $287.12 ! Accckkk!……….…Sigh……………………………..
