Just from the title and cover, I was excited to read this book to my child. But when they say don't judge a book by its cover, believe it. The book starts off fine but by the fourth page it gets really strange from there on out. The little girl is laughing or trying to scare a lion. The caged lion is scared and crying. On the same page it says that she likes herself wild and tamed. Later it says that even when she looks a mess she doesn't like herself any less. Another page says that she still likes herself with fleas and warts and a silly pig snout for a nose. This is disrespectful and it gets worse from there. I thought the author was African/American but as I'm reading, I just knew that there was a total disconnect from culture when reading this book. Then I looked up the author and she's an older white lady. I will not be reading this book to my kids and I advise you not to read this book to your child especially if you want a book that reflects your African/American child.
