Not Good
When reading a romance novel, part of the enjoyment for me is actually liking the characters and hoping they get together and stay together. Well, not possible for me in the this book. I truly disliked the 2 main characters.
SPOILER ALERT
Jack was a hypocrite. He talked of how loyal he was, was very happily married for almost 20 years, was never unfaithful, etc. But, when his wife is in a coma for a little over a year, he falls in love (lust) with his next woman. Of course, he thinks he is still loyal because he refuses to divorce her - but so what? He has an affair with another woman, moves her into the home he built for his wife, and then is going to have children with her. All while being such a "loyal" husband - yuck!
I would have respected and liked him so much more if he had actually been faithful, or at least divorced her prior to his having another relationship. I believe if he truly loved his wife, he would not have been able to fall in love with another woman. And, sorry, a little over a year is not long enough to wait. He was so proud of himself for not taking his ring off all this time - really? Whatever happened to his marriage vows? I wonder if he said I promise to be faithful -- unless you end up in a coma - then all bets are off!
Since he didn't love her anymore (because if he did, he would never have allowed himself to fall so much in love with another woman), and he was not going to honor his vows, he should have divorced her. He could still have supported her - because half of the money he had earned since he was married was hers anyway. Then, Clare's mother could have overseen her care. Even when Clare divorces him, the author makes him out to be a hero by writing her a healthy check, when in reality, Clare deserved much more than that. Jack had said he was worth "tons." Well, HALF of the tons that he had made while they were married would legally have been Clare's. So, he was getting off easy - he was no hero.
Andi was not any better. She knew he was still married, yet she moved right in to his wife's bed. I had no respect for her.
The only one I liked was Clare. I was happy when she decided to move on and leave Jack. Who would want to be married to someone that you know would only give you a year before he had started another family?
If something like this ever were to happen to me, and if my husband wanted another woman while I was in a coma, I would want him to divorce me BEFORE he started his affair. I would NOT want to be married to him any longer.
