An expensive hotel for rodents.
I bought this grill in the spring of 2015. But in early October, as our weather began to cool, I discovered a rodent nest in the bottom of the grill. I cleaned it out. Three days later, the nest was back. I cleaned it out again. Three days after that the nest was back again, and this time I saw a rodent scamper out of the base between the opening for the propane tank and the tank itself. I cleaned out the nest, removed the tank, covered the hole with a large square ceramic tile, and put down rodent killer pellets. A week later the rodent was back, this time with a large nest built on top of the burners, under the grates. And the rat poison was neatly stacked to the side of the nest.
On further inspection, I noticed a large hole in the back of the base, which I hadn’t covered, and which must have been the new access point. I cleaned out the nest one last time and left the grill cover and doors open. This openness to exposure seems to be the only way to keep them out.
In my view, the numerous gaps and holes in the base represent a fatal engineering flaw in this product. To allow so many large openings in the cabinet only invites pests to seek shelter. I consider my grill totally contaminated and now refuse to put food on it. It is useless to me at this point in time. $600 down the rat hole, literally.
I spoke with an executive at Weber, whose only suggestion was to hire an exterminator. This is, to me, not a solution. The grill has to be used outside, and we have acres of green space and brush around us, so pests are bound to be around. The Weber rep also said the holes were necessary for airflow to avoid high temperatures and must not be covered. So there is no solution to the current design.
If you want to spend $600 for a first rate home for mice and pack rats, this is the ideal product for you. If you want something to cook on that won’t let varmints in, look elsewhere.
