Buyer Beware, do your homework
The reader itself so far has worked fine, and without any issue. We use this as a backup; sometimes the internet goes down or there is a power outage and this allows us to serve our customers’ needs in extreme causes. I would never use this service or system as a primary merchant services for the following reasons: They write and claim you get your money within 1-2 business days. In our case its more like3 to 5 business days. There service is horrible. The first day the app was unable to process any payments. We called in they were closed. Emailed and about 24 hours after the service was up and running. They charge more then our current service provider but have horrible service; i don't mind paying extra for peace of mind, but SumUp has none!! SumUp policies are in conflict with the major card networks: SumUp says that while the payment is being processed, the card in use at the time will decide whether it requires signature or PIN. Always, SumUp has required a signature. While this is not an issue, my following point will explain why. Most major card networks do not require collecting signatures, granted the chip is inserted. We only accept chip cards and the chip must work. We do not engage in fallback transactions. SumUp says that in case of a chargeback, the merchant must disclose the signature and transaction information. Which is not an issue, we keep records of all transactions for five years. In the case that there is a chargeback, under SumUp’s policy states that the merchant is responsible for the chargeback and any other fees related to that. The whole point of EMV/Chip technology and the legislation behind it moves the liability to the party that has the least amount of security in the system. Which means, if the merchant has a chip reader( and payment is made via Chip.) they are not liable and all liability for the transaction now moves to the issuing bank/card network however not under SumUp’s policy. Not only is SumUp’s policy unethical, it is also illegal. They use a catch 22system. During the transaction system, the app will never prompt a user to use their pin, and therefor require a signature. In that event, if there is a chargeback they will charge you. SumUP says to match card information with an ID. Specifically, VISA prohibits merchants from IDing people unless they sell age restrictive items. As we do sell age restricted items we ID people to match identity of the cardholder too, but under normal VISA policy it is prohibited.
