★★☆☆☆
Sloppy plotting and research
The whole initial idea of an intelligence officer suddenly asking a young librarian to quit her job and move in with him to assist on a case does not make much sense. All of her supposed expertise in history could be found on Wikipedia in about 5 minutes. There are many errors in the author's depiction of ancient Rome - misspellings, such as using the word vigil instead of the correct word for Roman guard which is vigile, confusing singular and plural - virgo mortuus is singular, not plural, plus I think it should have the feminine ending, and many more. Also the anachronisms were very distracting, such as ancient Romans repeatedly asking each other if they are "okay". I believe that if the history is important to the story it needs to be presented accurately. For very enjoyable and historically accurate mysteries set in ancient Rome I would recommend Steven Saylor's books.
