Falls short of previous generation Pro X2 features
I'm an owner of an Eye-Fi Pro X2, Eye-Fi Mobi, and now Eye-Fi Mobi Pro. The Mobi Pro attempts to bring features from both the Pro X2 and the Mobi. Eye-Fi has discontinued the Pro X2 in favor of the Mobi Pro, so I will compare the two directly in this review.
I use the Pro X2 to connect to a wifi hotspot and upload images via the Internet to my computer miles away. The Mobi can't do this. The Mobi Pro can, but with some caveats:
- You must run a device with the Mobi app on the same network as the Mobi Pro to be able to upload images. The Pro X2 could do this autonomously. In the remote hotspot situation I described, this means an extra tablet or computer is required to utilize the Mobi Pro.
- They got rid of the Endless Memory feature, so after transferring images, you still have to physically access the camera to format the SD card (once every 32 GB of images). The Pro X2 could delete images automatically after successful transfer, so you never had to format the card.
- The Mobi app on my Mac is pretty buggy. It locks up often. When not locked up, it still fails to routinely download images. The Mobi Pro card indicates they've been transferred, but the app just sits idle.
Here's the kicker of it all: The app required to download images from a Pro X2 and the one required for Mobi Pro are different and conflict. Eye-Fi says to uninstall one before installing the other. This means I need two different computers to continue using all my various Eye-Fi hardware. If you're a happy owner of a Pro X2, don't upgrade to the Mobi Pro!
Edit 2015-06-18: Added extra required device caveat I somehow missed in my original review. This is actually a deal-breaker for my operation, so I'll have to look into alternatives once the X2 is no longer available.
