Miele vacuums are great when they work but are unreliable and expensive to own and operate
We have a Miele S8390 vacuum that is very similar to this model. We paid about $1,000 for this machine, something I felt was overpriced at the time—however, we bought it based on the Miele name and that it was made in Germany. Today, 2.5 years later, I can report that we have had two major problems with this vacuum. The first problem, related to the hose not working properly, was shortly after the way too short one year warranty elapsed and the second was March 2015. The latest problem with this vacuum was the wand that connects the hose to the attachment failed which cost me $150. The wand is expensive because it contains electrical parts that operate the power head. My vacuum cleaner has never been abused, dropped or otherwise mistreated a view supported by the authorized dealer (Best Vac-St. Charles,IL) that reviewed my problem then sold me the replacement. The retailer was great--they did every thing possible to alleviate my pain which included providing discounts on future purchases--bags, etc. Save your money for products that either have a good warranty (unlike Miele) or are more reliable. Miele customer support informed me that parts like the wand are subject to user experience and therefore cannot be warrantied beyond one-year. For $1,000 you can definitely do better than this! Yes, the vacuum cleaner does a good job, but who wants to keep dropping $150 every year or so for faulty designs or workmanship. And, the bags aren’t cheap and the replacement HEPA filter is also expensive. Separately, I tried to post, on two separate occasions, a review on the Miele website on this vacuum cleaner, consistent with this one. I included the serial number of the machine, which should be proof of ownership to Miele, rather than a competitor posting a negative review. Guess what? Miele hasn't posted either review nor did they acknowledge my reviews, so if you visit the Miele website and read the reviews, consider that Miele must not be posting reviews that are unfavorable to its products. In other words, the reviews are marketing materials for Miele, not honest unbiased customer reviews! Good and reputable companies, like Allen Edmonds, the up-scale men's clothier, publishes reviews as submitted (apparently) and then separately adds the company spin and addresses concerns and how to resolve any issues. Miele? They just don't post unfavorable reviews and leave the consumer high and dry. Update, July 2016. Miele no longer publishes reviews on its website, which I guess makes them look better--at least they don't mislead customers thinking they publish all reviews--both negative and positive. However, consistent with my review above, the wand is "acting up" again and will likely need to be replaced again, for a nice sum of $150! Update, January 2017. My hose just failed on this vacuum costing me $150! The hose is a model SES 121 and is very expensive because it has electrical contacts to operate the power head. The power head tool is a terrific tool. I considered buying a different vacuum but decided to live with the expected annual $150 Miele repair cost as the vacuum is a great tool--just keep your credit card handy! Update, August 2017. The cord just failed. Another cost to absorb. Oh well, it vacuums great.
