I work in environmental consulting and I am trained in Hazardous Waste Operations, which has very strict standards for environmental safety and personal protective equipment, so I have years of experience using a lot of materials that professionals use that prevent exposure to various chemicals (including N95 and R95 masks). I purchased this material on a whim and out of curiosity, when it arrived you can definitely see through the pores in the fabric. A number 13 MERV rating (and higher) means filtration of particles on the MIRCON level scale- which is well outside of the range of human vision. This is the filtration you need to capture smoke particles and viruses. Also, measuring the fabric they also shorted me 2 square feet, and it came in a long skinny sheet of uneven width (it varied between 26 and 27.5 inches). All is not lost however, I will be using this material as a dust/large particle pre-filter on my existing (labelled and brand name) MERV 13 / HEPA HVAC filters, which will extend their use.
