COST OF GENERIC VS NAME BRAND (could be more expensive for the generic):
All of us buy generic brush head replacements (bhr for short) because we are trying to save money over the name brands and at least get comparable use.
So I worked this out based on the cost per use and using my experience and the other poor reviews.
At the time of writing this the price per generic bhr was $00.67, so if the price changes you can still plug in the new price per item in the calculation.
I did buy the pack of 20 at a higher price and so far each bhr has lasted about a week for me. As mentioned by other people the internal mechanism in each brh comes apart and it stops oscillating. Basically you end up with a glorified toothbrush and have to attach a new one.
The comparable Oral-B name brands I looked at on Amazon are approximately $20 for three bhrs. Working on the assumption that each Oral-B bhr is recommended for 3-4 months of use and there are no quality issues.
COST CALCULATION (free shipping option):
3 months of use per Oral-B bhr (pack of 3) equals a total of 9 months of use for $20.
If each generic bhr lasts....
1 week then $00.67 * 36 (there are 36 one week periods in 9 months) = $24.12
1.5 weeks then $00.67 * 24 (there are 24 one and a half week periods in 9 months) = $16.08
2 weeks then $00.67 * 18 (there are 18 two week periods in 9 months) = $12.06
4 months of use per Oral-B bhr (pack of 3) equals a total of 12 months of use for $20.
If each generic bhr lasts....
1 week then $00.67 * 52 (there are 52 one week periods in 12 months) = $34.84
1.5 weeks then $00.67 * 34.6 (there are 34.6 one and a half week periods in 12 months) = $23.18
2 weeks then $00.67 * 26 (there are 26 two week periods in 12 months) = $17.42
CONCLUSION:
9 months of use: Generic is between $12-$24 vs. Oral-B for $20.
12 months of use: Generic is between $17-$35 vs. Oral-B for $20.
Assuming the quality (good or bad) is consistent for any brand you buy, factors such as number of times you brush a day (I brush twice a day), brush time and the force you use has an effect on the lifespan of a bhr.
You'll SAVE MONEY IF each generic bhr lasts at least 1.5 weeks and you used to change each Oral-B bhr every 3 months OR
if each generic bhr lasts at least 2 weeks and you used to change each Oral-B bhr every 4 months.
It appears like you're getting a good deal because of the number of bhrs in a pack, but in all likelihood this generic brand will COST YOU AS MUCH OR MORE than the name brand if you brush twice a day. You MAY save money if you brush once a day and are gentle, in which case it's a buy and try scenario.
IMHO...The quality per generic bhr may be very inconsistent, hence the inconsistent reviews. The first bhr I used vibrated too much because it didn't fit properly and lasted just under a week, the others fit properly and lasted about a week (still got a bunch more to go). I gave this one star because more money spent not saved. I will not buy again! The only advantage a generic could have over the name brand is that by using a new bhr more frequently it's more sanitary (again it's only my opinion).
The price may be dropping to make it a better deal compared to the name brand, however for me it would have to drop significantly to be worthwhile for a one-week per bhr lifespan.
The only reasonably priced quality generic I've had a good experience with so far is the Walgreens brand.
