Questionable Stainless Steel Grade
I'm going to have to give this a one star review because I suspect these are NOT 201 stainless steel. 201 is already a cost-cutting, cheap alternative to the standard 304 grade.
I purchased a set of three last year. Back then, I didn't know much about stainless steel kitchenware and was rather impressed with the overall appearance and seemingly high quality look and feel of these plates. I used them on a camping trip with no complaints. They were easy to clean and were quite versatile. The nice matte polish made them look so sleek.
Here's the problem:
I ordered a 6-pack set recently, and after washing before use, I noticed that there was some gray residue coming off of the plates despite looking polished and clean. I used paper towels to dry them, but when I looked at the paper towels, they were stained gray. I guess hadn't noticed this before with my other set, but that's because I never hand dried them. This was really concerning to me, because I washed them three times. It stained my sponge and continued to stain paper towels. I turned to the internet for some tips. This is where I started researching more about stainless steel and what's considered food grade.
201 is a cheap grade. There has been a flux of manufacturers opting to use 201-grade stainless steel (usually on grills and whatnot, from what I understand) due to cost-efficiency. I was okay with what I read until I further dove into the chemical properties of a 201 grade stainless steel. Apparently, 201 is a non-magnetic, which means these plates are NOT SUPPOSED TO BE MAGNETIC.
I immediately grabbed a kitchen magnet to test this out. The magnet stuck to the plates. When the plates were stacked, the magnetic attraction was a lot stronger, especially at the center/base of the plates. I tested every individual plate out. The magnet attached itself to the plate with ease, and I even held it upside down to see if the magnet will fall out. NOPE. Stuck to it like glue. Absolutely disconcerting.
Product is not as described, and I'm planning on tossing the original set of three I purchased last year if I can't find non-kitchen use for them.
My wallet is going to take a hit for this, but I'm either going completely titanium or look into Kupilka. Stainless steel was supposed to be a safe alternative, but these plates are not worth the risk. It's no wonder the product description doesn't tell you the composition of the plate (18/8 stainless steel, etc.).
Take my review with a grain of salt but please do your own research. I do not feel comfortable using these plates anymore based on my findings (to be fair, I only researched for about an hour before making up my mind). Who knows, maybe I'm overreacting, but the new set I got is going back. I wish I read the 3-star review pointing out the same concern before ordering.
