Bad feminism
I consider myself a feminist and was excited when we received these books for my daughter, because I want her to learn about powerful female role models, but I was sorely disappointed. In the Pioneers book, it says: "Marie Curie experimented and proved that girls are brilliant" - where's the educational value? It doesn't really tell the reader anything about Marie Curie (like what kind of experiments she did). Marie Curie is important because of the advances she made in science and because she was the first woman to win a Nobel Prize. I want my daughter to take for granted that women are brilliant, not have a book tell her we are or that we weren't always thought to be (she will learn that the hard way later).
A good feminist book would tell stories about strong, intelligent, courageous women and let girls draw the obvious conclusion that they too can be brilliant scientists or strong leaders or fearless explorers. Instead, they boil down female accomplishments into successes for women, instead of successes for society.
