Skip the WiFi and save your money. The WiFi is buggy and insecure. Plenty of better non-networked Sous Vide cookers out there
Be careful when making the decision to purchase this. The main reason that people buy Anova over many of the cheaper units out there is because they want the wireless control that this particular product offers.
If you look at the 1 star reviews here (and do some google searches), you will find thread after thread of people trying to troubleshoot the wireless setup here. That's because, for whatever reason, Anova decided not to follow the RFC or use any type of standard wireless driver. Instead, they seem to have written their own solution, and it's quite frankly an insecure piece of crap.
After more than 4 hours of troubleshooting, here's what I can tell you:
- If you normally use a reasonably secure wifi password, Anova expects that you will reduce your security. Their wifi product does not support special characters or spaces in the password. It also doesn't support passwords longer than 18 characters. To get this to work, I had to change the wireless password on every device in my house
- If your Network SSID has a space in it, that won't work either. And Anova tech support doesn't even know that this is a problem to tell you. They had me run wireless diagnostics and send it to them, which i did, and they didn't see any problems. But the reality is that I had to remove all spaces from the SSID before this would work.
- You will have to disable wireless cloaking. There's no reason for that, given that you're already connected through bluetooth. It should easily be able to send out probes, but they clearly didn't include that functionality
- Guest networks and other networks may cause problems. They had me turn off my kids network and guest network to get this to work.
- You will have to disable 5ghz and go with only 2.4ghz. For whatever reason, they don't support that either.
Essentially, their embedded software is a custom written piece of crap that doesn't follow the standard at all. This is not rocket science. Standard wireless interfaces are well defined and publicly available and there's no reason for them to have butchered their own propriatary version.
Now that I finally figured out the spaces in SSID thing, i got it working, but it doesn't matter. I'm going to return it and instead shop for a high quality unit without networking (that will still be cheaper than this was while "on sale").
Now, maybe you're thinking that doesn't matter in your case, but let me include a couple of statements about their support organization as well.
- There are countless posts from over a year ago about people having various wireless problems. Their engineers reportedly were fixing it then. Yet here we are, a year later, and the problems still exist. They aren't going to support you.
- When you do need technical support, they are extremely inattentive. I would email their support and tell them what I tried, and in their next email, they would ask me to try the exact same thing. This happened not once, but multiple times. They clearly don't read their message, but instead respond with mundane, ineffective, pre-canned answers that won't solve your problems.
tl;dr: If you're buying this because of the wireless, save your money and buy a high quality device that doesn't include overpriced, barely functional frill features
