★☆☆☆☆
Painfully Bad Writing
This book was chosen for my monthly book club, so I persevered through the eye-rolling narration and inconceivable dialogue, but really regret every moment I wasted reading this. Even the plot, which held some promise, was boggled and botched by the author's poor writing style and off-kilter pacing. The characters unanimously fell flat and were completely unbelievable. The profanity was by and large gratuitous and so out of place in its unlikely locations that it seemed as if a child just learning to swear penned this novel. The short, staccato sentences and inclusion of unnecessary dot-connecting narrative for the reader also grated on my literary senses. Perhaps the worst element, though, was the descriptions of the characters' physical movements. They were awful enough to be laughable, especially at the point multiple people were "quirking" their eyebrows, one side of their mouths, etc. And no one ever pointed to anything, everyone "thumbed" at or toward things. It was just far too many thumbs for a book not about hitch hiking. Ultimately, there is no story worth telling if you can't tell it well.
