To begin with this bucket of oats is only 60% full, as in 40% empty. It is 10 Lbs. as advertised, It's just that leaving a bucket 40% empty is not a very efficient use of space, especially seeing as how part of Augason Farms sales pitch is how their square buckets are a 20% more efficient use of space than a round bucket. My real complaint however is that their claim of a 30 year shelf life is totally bogus. Other companies that make such claims package their goods inside a heat sealed Mylar Bag with an adequate size Oxygen Absorber inside it. This Mylar Bag full of goods is then sealed inside the bucket. The use of a Mylar Bag is necessary because the plastic of the bucket is permeable to air & moisture and because the seal of the bucket lid is hardly dependable. Augason Farms not only does not use a Mylar Bag, the Oxygen Absorber they put in the bucket is only 500cc in size. This size bucket requires at least a 1000cc - 2000cc size oxygen absorber (depending on density of goods), and that is if the bucket is full of goods... not 40% full of air! Their packaging is absolutely and totally inadequate for a long shelf life. I added 8 pounds of oats to Augason Farms 10 pounds, then repackaged the 18 pounds of oats (in the same bucket) in a heat sealed mylar bag with a 2000cc oxygen absorber. NOW this bucket of oats is FULL and good for 30 YEARS if stored in proper conditions! An Added Note: I've come to discover that all of Augason Farm's buckets of food are lacking the use of a Mylar Bag and an adequate size Oxygen Absorber. Buyer beware of bogus claims of a long shelf life.
