Eye rolling
I was looking for a light read when I started this. I liked the premise. But I could barely force myself to finish. I was CONSTANTLY rolling my eyes at their behavior and their prose. The problem was the characters jumped into bed basically immediately, which in the time and place they were living is completely unbelievable. Especially as casually as they did. This is especially unbelievable for the female character. And I just didn't buy into their romance at all. It felt very shallow. Also, for two people getting married for the sole reason of claiming an inheritance, why would they risk waiting until the very last possible second to actually marry rather than doing it earlier? They hung out for two weeks prior to the scheduled ceremony. It was an arranged marriage; it's not like they had to really get to know each other. It made no sense to me. Nor did the legalities of the will (it wasn't so easy back then to just will away an estate), the last minute drama (I won't spoil it), the brothers' laid back reaction to said drama, the mother's side plot, and a million other things. It wasn't the events themselves so much as the character's behavior throughout; it was just so unbelievable that I couldn't enjoy the story.
