Bad Printer: Printer and Replacement both DOA.
Bought this printer to replace my old Brother printer because I wanted to upgrade to duplex. It had relay good reviews, so I had high expectations.
Setup was quite easy, though the printer was not recognized on the network at first until I rebooted it a few times. And from time to time, my computer can't find it, and I have to restart it. This is disappointing as I keep it in the basement and hate having to go down stairs to reboot it before I print, but I have found if I print several things, I just go down and reboot it when I am ready and they all print at once. Annoying, but not the worst problem. I use both this, and my old Brother printer on WiFi and never had this issue with the Brother.
Black and white print quality is good and color is decent. I don't think its any better or worse than my 3 year old Brother. Ink is a lot more expensive, so I hope it lasts longer.
What bothers me:
I can't put photo paper in the bypass feeder, I have to take the whole tray out, remove the paper, and put the photo paper in. 4X6 is not a valid size option for the bypass feeder, and when I try to manually create it, the printer changes the size to 4X8. i was hoping to keep photo paper in there and print as necessary.
What really bothers me:
The printer miss-fed the day after I got it, it tried to pull two sheets of standard plain paper (HP 96 White Ink Jet Paper), and the rollers turned without the paper advancing. It kept on printing when there was no paper. First of all, it should not have miss-fed on plain paper. Second of all, the printer head printed all over the rollers. Most printers that support border-less printing have a catch tray, they don't print all over themselves. Ever since the miss feed, I have 4 black stripes on the back of every page I print, so duplex is now pointless. I called Epson and went through it with them. There answer was that I need to send the unit in for servicing. A printer should not be able to print over its own rollers and damage itself in a way so that it needs servicing when there is a simple miss feed. Also, needing serving after 2 days really bothers me.
I arranged for a replacement unit through Amazon, and hopefully that was just a bad unit. I have not tried scanning yet. When I get the new one, I will update my review to include scanning. I will also hopefully update it to say that the one I received was a fluke. My fingers are crossed that the new one works better.
And if anyone knows a way to use photo paper in the bypass tray please comment on this.
Edit:
So, the new printer arrived, I set it up, and it worked perfectly as a printer. Then I tried to scan on the flat bed. There was a horrible sound, I only got half of my page, and then the screen on the printer turned red and said there was an internal error and that I had to restart. I tried it again with the cover open and the bar moves about halfway, gets stuck, tries turning sideways, and then jams. Same error, restarted it, and tried the feeder for scanning. I just get the message that there is an internal error and to contact Epson.
After this I downgraded my rating to 1 star, and will be returning the second unit. Two units that don't work on arrival is unacceptable to me.
