★★☆☆☆
An overhyped waste of $75.
I was hoping for something a little more action/adventure focused. Barring that, I hoped it might be a roguelike for people who don’t usually enjoy roguelikes (ex: Hades, Dead Cells). But no. It’s a roguelike for people who DO like roguelikes. It’s addictive and entertaining for two or three hours, but that’s not enough to justify paying Sony’s inflated $70 (plus tax) price tag. It’s a shame because it seems like there’s a great story to uncover and plenty of mystery, but it’s buried behind the horrible structure of a game that doesn’t reward your progress or respect your time. I’m not opposed to hard games. I’m a fan of souls-likes. I got the Bloodborne platinum. I beat Sekiro. Etc. etc. etc. But I’m not a fan of playing hours into a game with almost nothing to show for it and very little sense of progress. I feel obligated to try a bit longer, else it’s truly money down the drain. But oof. I would not recommend it unless your tastes in third person action and roguelikes intersect. Gaming media has really talked this game up, but it’s in no way a PS5 must-play. *UPDATE* I only spent a little more time with it, and gave up after several hard-fought attempts at the third-level boss. This was before they patched in the ability to do a suspend-save, which I believe can be exploited by exiting and copying it up to the cloud. I tried this on one run the other day, and it does seem to work (I can re-download from the cloud to continue the same save multiple times) but I was too rusty at the controls and systems to really make any progress that way. So ultimately, my opinion is unchanged. This game has its fans. That's great. From where I stand, though, it either needs to ditch the rouge-like structure to become more Metroid Prime-like (which is impossible) or it needs to scale down the absurd difficulty (which, I'm sure, would anger the fans who finished it "the right way").
