Deserves a zero
This is probably one of the worst books I've ever read. Luckily, I borrowed the Kindle version, so it cost me nothing. And it's a great example of "you get what you pay for." The rave reviews must all be from relatives of the author. If you love words and language, please don't read this book. The author often uses the wrong word. That's bad enough, but where are his editors? Example: At least two places, he uses the word "recant" incorrectly (it should be "recount," as in telling a story, not retractng a statement). And even more annoyingly, since the setting is a hospital, thus the word comes up often is his use of "emergent" when it is obvious that "emergency" is the appropriate word ("We had an emergent situation last night.") The word is used that way at least a dozen times. Emergent is not the correct word in context of a hospital. If it were, they'd call it the "Emergent Room." And in another almost laughable case of careless editing, at one point, an unconscious patient, Jacob, is being treated by a doctor, Jack, in an "emergent"situation. All of a sudden, the doc's name becomes Jacob, and he begins yelling orders like "Start CPR," which is funny because Jacob, the patient, is still unconcious and still Jacob. That goes on for a while until Jacob becomes Jack again. No harm done -- except to the readers who have a right to expect professional editing of a published work. I could go on, but you should get the idea. The writing is sophomoric and the story is terrible. I really can't think of one good thing to say about this book. I have spent a fair amount of time in hospitals, interacting with staff, and I can tell you that the dialogue is not realistic (stilted and overly jargonistic sometimes and at other times too unprofessional, like calling lubricant used for ultrasounds "goo.") Some may think I'm getting too riled up over this book; it IS just a book, after all. But I don't see it that way. I get upset when I see the English language abused the way it is in this book. I teach college freshmen, so I know what language abuse looks like! My students would never submit writing this bad. I have never written a review on Amazon before but I was hoping that I could prevent another person who values quality writing from wasting a few hours of his or her life trying to find something positive in Seven Patients. Don't bother; it's not there.
