I like the features
My grind and brew coffee maker bit the dust, so I needed a replacement. I drink exclusively fresh roasted beans from a quality roaster, so I decided to upgrade to a high quality coffee maker and separate burr grinder. I already have a semi-auto espresso maker, so the grinder is for drip coffee and the occasional French press or pour over. After research and sorting through the reviews on Amazon, I settled on the Breville. I like the features, and as a bonus, it came in red. Please check out some other reviews if you want to learn more about how it operates, as I did not have the grinder long enough to give it a fair evaluation on that.
After I received the first grinder, I successfully had a lovely pot of coffee. Between the grind and brew and this new grinder, I was using a whirly blade grinder. What a difference. A burr grinder really is needed to get the most out of the beans. I was pleased. Then day two to make coffee. FAIL. The grinder simply would not work. For reference, the beans were a lighter roast (City), so it was not an issue with oil buildup. I followed some trouble shooting. It just would not work again. Amazon is amazing and sent a replacement out immediately.
Grinder 2. This time I got 3 grinds out of it before the grinder stopped. I followed trouble shooting, and ultimately I think it's a gear made of plastic that just keeps slipping. There is a built in protection that stops the grinder if it has too much torque - such as a rock entering the grinder. This keeps the motor from burning out. But there were no rocks, just light roasted coffee beans. Maybe it was a batch the slipped through quality control; maybe the issue is more common among the ones cased in red. But at this price point, that really should not happen. So back it went. After two failures, I was done with giving the Breville a chance. I purchased a Baratza and moved on. I am pleased with the Baratza - it works like it should.
