Not for beginners... intermediate or advanced either
Short and sweet: Get Troy Stetina's "Speed Mechanics" book. Speed Mechanics for Lead Guitar For the rant read on.
Another guitar technique book, with no discussion of how to properly play the examples. 365 licks, but no discussion of how to play any of the licks. Also, it is supposed to teach technique through licks. I expected to also see some discussion of where the licks came from.
From there, we also have someone who may be a great player but I don't think he has much knowledge of teaching or his own beginner days.
Take his first exercise as an example. It is a speed picking lick, no discussion of how to hold the pick, no discussion of whether the player should pick from the wrist or the arm, no discussion of co-ordination of the left and right hands. Just a lick and metronome indications. And the metronome indications... oh my... He sets this to be played from 40bpm to 112bpm, but gives no discussion of how to build this speed. How many beginners can actually pick 448 notes in a minute? This is a knife to the heart of a beginner. And his book makes it seem that you should be able to master each lick in a day. This could be the only book a beginner ever needs, they can be so discouraged they sell the guitar on craigslist the next day.
Horrible.
