Coating Washes off, Offgassing, Possibly not food safe
Unfortunately, this rolling pin has been unusable because there is a toxic smelling stain or toxic clear coating on it. The rolling pin arrived on time and was packaged alright. Unfortunately when the shipping box was open there was an immediate strong toxic smell similar to that of paint stripper or a non food safe wood stain coming off the rolling pin. I tried to wash it in the sink with regular dish detergent and a soft dish sponge and the clear coating started to wash off in irregular patches and the off gassing was terrible. The distinct toxic smell filled the kitchen. Determined to give it a chance I let it sit in the sink for a week, 7 days, washing intermittently and letting it dry. Parts of the coating fell off but parts of it stayed with light daily washing, which was disconcerting. After a full week of washing. It started to smell ok. I used it to roll some bread dough, and the light, remaining toxic smell transferred to the dough. After baking, the bread, which I've made every week for a year without this outcome, had a slight plastic taste and made me and one other person sick to the point of going to the hospital afterwards. I should not have given this rolling pin a try in the first place, but I am disappointed that a product like this that is potentially a health hazard has been sold to consumers for use in food preparation.
