R.I.P., Saveur!
I never thought this would happen to my beloved *Saveur*, the only magazine I never throw away. Saveur was deeply satisfying to read--it was elegant, literary, even scholarly--but never pompous or stuffy; gorgeously written by and for people who still possess attention spans and have vocabularies that extend beyond the word "epic". Each issue was an unpretentious trip around the world; in other words--*not* in need of a shallow, obnoxious makeover. Everything out there is written like clickbait now and it's tremendously depressing. This year's subscription was a Christmas gift, which I'll now be happy to let expire. I guess it's on to Cook's Illustrated from here. Hopefully they won't also undergo a hip, show-offy, "Think You Can Make Toast? Here Are 10 Things You're Doing Wrong!" transformation into a glorified collection of listicles. Saveur was like a great friend who would never make fun of you for reading a book about the spice trade or the history of sugar, and Bon Appetit/New Saveur, etc. is like the loud guy in the "Bacon" T-shirt who makes fun of you for not putting Sriracha on everything and lives in fear of *not* being up to speed on the latest food truck. I can't stand that guy.
