★☆☆☆☆
you're kidding me
This reads like a college student's first attempt at writing a novel. The characters are flat; the situations are bland (ordinary or simple is fine but it's just boring); every detail is hyperbolic (everything is the greatest or worst.) The writer does not present a credible portrait of children. From day one of school, the six year olds are immediately split out into the high school cliques you'd see in a movie from the outcasts, to the cheerleaders (they have cheerleaders in kindergarten?), to the sociopathic, murderous bullies. The writer does not seem to understand women. A female character is always described by her taut abs; women who stand up to abusive men must be punished; and the lead character cannot simply lose his virginity, he must be abused by a teenage nymphomaniac who treats him as her "personal vibrator" (embarrassingly, this phrase is spoken by a female character and repeated throughout the book.) Other poor reviews note the heavy religious content. That's not my preference but I'm okay if it helps tell a story. Here, it seems to be a crutch so that the writer can juxtapose the devil boy (everyone says he has red eyes but the narration clears say that he has pink eyes due to albinisim) with God-fearing, devout Catholicism. At best, the religious content is quaint but at worst it is creepy. A detailless spoiler: the final pages of the book include a weird soft-core sex scene (which is, of course the best sex ever and includes taut abs) followed post-coitally by an out of the blue decision to go on a religious pilgrimage and then a detailed account of that trip. Weird. I finished this book only because I felt that if I didn't finish it, I might give up on reading for a while - it was bad. Also, I'm frustrated that I paid $6 for this book and now that I'm writing this review, it's been added to Kindle Unlimited.
